A critical review of van : earthquake prediction from seismic electrical signals par Lighthill, James, Sir. Publication : [S.l.] World Scientific Publishing Company 1996 . 388 p. , The acronym VAN refers to Drs Varotsos, Alexopoulos and Nomicos, members of a group based in the University of Athens and led by Professor Varotsos (head of the Physics Department) which for over a decade has sought to use electric-field measurements between electrodes buried in the earth to predict earthquakes in Greece over periods of order one month or less. But is such "short-term" prediction achievable by the VAN approach (or by any other)? This book is an objective collection of the arguments for - and the counterarguments against - that approach, intended to help scientific readers arrive at their own answers to this important question, as well as to others (including that of VAN's "export" potential). 22 cm. Ad hoc and sensor networks : theory and applications par Cordeiro, Carlos de Morais. Publication : [S.l.] World Scientific Publishing Company 2011 . 664 p. , This book provides a comprehensive yet easy coverage of ad hoc and sensor networks and fills the gap of existing literature in this growing field. It emphasizes that there is a major interdependence among various layers of the network protocol stack. Contrary to wired or even one-hop cellular networks, the lack of a fixed infrastructure, the inherent mobility, the wireless channel, and the underlying routing mechanism by ad hoc and sensor networks introduce a number of technological challenges that are difficult to address within the boundaries of a single protocol layer. All existing textbooks on the subject often focus on a specific aspect of the technology, and fail to provide critical insights on cross-layer interdependencies. To fully understand these intriguing networks, one need to grasp specific solutions individually, and also the many interdependencies and cross-layer interactions. 24 cm. Advanced Quantum Mechanics par Dyson,, Freeman. Publication : [S.l.] World Scientific Publishing Company 2007 . 236 p. , Renowned physicist and mathematician Freeman Dyson is famous for his work in quantum mechanics, nuclear weapons policy and bold visions for the future of humanity. In the 1940s, he was responsible for demonstrating the equivalence of the two formulations of quantum electrodynamics Richard Feynman's diagrammatic path integral formulation and the variational methods developed by Julian Schwinger and Sin-Itiro Tomonoga showing the mathematical consistency of QED. This invaluable volume comprises the legendary, never-before-published, lectures on quantum electrodynamics first given by Dyson at Cornell University in 1951. The late theorist Edwin Thompson Jaynes once remarked "For a generation of physicists they were the happy medium: clearer and motivated than Feynman, and getting to the point faster than Schwinger . Future generations of physicists are bound to read these lectures with pleasure, benefiting from the lucid style that is so characteristic of Dyson's exposition. 25 cm. An Introduction to geometrical physics / par Aldrovandi, R. Publication : [S.l.] : World Scientific Publishing Company, 1995 . 699 p. ; , This book stresses the unifying power of the geometrical framework in bringing together concepts from the different areas of physics. Common underpinnings of optics, elasticity, gravitation, relativistic fields, particle mechanics and others subjects are underlined. It attempts to extricate the notion of space currently in the physical literature from the metric connotation. The book's goal is to present mathematical ideas associated with geometrical physics in a rather introductory language. Included are many examples from elementary physics and also, for those wishing to reach a higher level of understanding, a more advanced treatment of the mathematical topics. It is aimed as an elementary text, more so than most others on the market, and is intended for first year graduate students. 22 cm. Basic control volume finite element methods for fluids and solids par Voller, Vaughan R. Publication : Singapore World Scientific Publishing Company 2009 . 170 p. , The Control Volume Finite Element Method (CVFEM) is a hybrid numerical method, combining the physics intuition of Control Volume Methods with the geometric flexibility of Finite Element Methods. The concept of this monograph is to introduce a common framework for the CVFEM solution so that it can be applied to both fluid flow and solid mechanics problems. To emphasize the essential ingredients, discussion focuses on the application to problems in two-dimensional domains which are discretized with linear-triangular meshes. This allows for a straightforward provision of the key information required to fully construct working CVFEM solutions of basic fluid flow and solid mechanics problems. Contents: Governing Equations; The Essential Ingredients in a Numerical Solution; Control Volume Finite Element Data Structure; Control Volume Finite Element Method (CVFEM) Discretization and Solution; The Control Volume Finite Difference Method; Analytical and CVFEM Solutions of Advection-Diffusion Equations; A Plane Stress CVFEM Solution; CVFEM Stream Function-Vorticity Solution for a Lid Driven Cavity Flow; Notes Toward the Development of a 3-D CVFEM Code. 23 cm. Compressibility of ultra-soft soil par Bo, Myint Win. Publication : Hackensack, N.J. World Scientific Publishing Company 2008 . 287 p. , The formation of an alluvial clay deposit normally goes through sedimentation and consolidation. While the bottom portion is undergoing self-weight consolidation, sedimentation continues to take place at the top. However, the compression behavior of such deposits upon loading is not well understood. This book describes the compression behavior of ultra-soft soil upon additional load application. Various types of laboratory compression tests suitable for this type of soil are discussed, such as tests using small- and large-scale consolidometers, hydraulic Rowe cells under different drainage conditions, constant rate of loading and constant rate of strain tests. It also explains how to determine the transition point, which differentiates the two distinct behaviors between slurry state and soil state deformation. Methods to determine the compression indices and coefficients of consolidation at different stress ranges, which are required for the prediction of magnitude of settlement and time rate of settlement, are developed. An equation for predicting settlement of ultra-soft soil in both the slurry and soil stages is elaborated upon. These proposed methods of characterization or analyses -- which are validated against published data, laboratory measurements and a case study -- serve as useful tools for designing and constructing embankments and for carrying out land reclamation on ultra-soft soil. Contents: Sedimentation and Consolidation; Models and Analogy; Characterization of Physical Properties and Mineralogy of the Soil; Compression Tests with Large Scale Consolidometer; Compression Test on Slurry with Small-Scale Consolidometer; Compression Tests on Ultra-Soft Soil with Hydraulic Consolidation Cell; Continuous Loading Tests on Ultra-Soft Soil; Constant Rate of Strain Test on Ultra-Soft Soil; Verification of Proposed Formulae and Models with Laboratory Measurements; Case Study. 24 cm. Dna polymerases : discovery, characterization and functions in cellular dna transactions par Hubscher, Ulrich. Publication : [S.l.] World Scientific Publishing Company 2010 . 340 p. , Maintenance of the information embedded in the genomic DNA sequence is essential for life. DNA polymerases play pivotal roles in the complex processes that maintain genetic integrity. Besides their tasks in vivo, DNA polymerases are the workhorses in numerous biotechnology applications such as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), cDNA cloning, genome sequencing, nucleic acids-based diagnostics and in techniques to analyze ancient and otherwise damaged DNA. Moreover, some diseases are related to DNA polymerase defects, and chemotherapy through inhibition of DNA polymerases is used to fight HIV, Herpes and Hepatitis B and C infections. We have recently witnessed the discovery of an abundance of novel DNA polymerases in viruses, bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes with specialized properties whose physiological functions are only beginning to be understood. This book summarizes the current knowledge of these fascinating enzymes. It is intended for a wide audience from basic scientists, to diagnostic laboratories and to clinicians who seek a better understanding of these fascinating enzymes. 25 cm.
